   political figure, prime minister
   The first woman to become prime minister of France, Édith Cresson was born in Boulogne-sur-Seine and educated in Paris. She served as a Socialist deputy in the National Assembly from 1981 to 1993, during which time she also served as minister of agriculture (1981-83), minister of foreign trade and tourism (1983-84), of industrial redevelopment and trade (1984-86), and of European affairs (1988-90). Chosen as the first woman prime minister of France in 1991 by François Mitterrand, whom she had staunchly supported, Cresson was known for her energy and candor. Always an outspoken and controversial figure, Édith Cresson was replaced in April 1992 by pierre Bérégovoy after the Socialists lost in regional elections.
